July 27 Meeting – Summertime Challenges Rap Session!

Due to the great response from our previous rap sessions, we will be having another interactive meeting, this time on the subject of hearing challenges in the summer.

Are you confused about what auditory equipment to pack for a day at the beach?
What should you take and what should you leave at home?

Are you worried that sweating in the heat of summer will cause your hearing aid to malfunction?

For you CI wearers, are you concerned about going through metal detectors and scanners at airports?

Would you like to be prepared for travel with a kit for your hearing equipment, devices and accessories?

Day and Time: Saturday, July 27 – 9:30am for light fare and shmoozing, 10:00-noon for program and other HLAA announcements.

Location: Sherman Oaks Library –14245 Moorpark St, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423

Meeting transcript can be found here.

A HUGE thank you to Richard Ray, ADA Technology Access Coordinator, for a most informative and passionate education this past Saturday on the text to 911 visual paging system, as well as many other communication accessible services you have helped bring to fruition over the years.

Real time text (RTT) is truly a game changer – thank you for not only teaching us what it is and how to use it, but also how to install and operate it on our phones! The entire deaf and HOH community is beyond fortunate to have your expertise and advocacy on all our behalf.

Stay tuned for upcoming details for our July wrap session coming on Saturday, July 27!

What a great 2019 Walk4Hearing event! The Los Angeles Chapter “LA Stars” team was again the top and most awesome team thanks to so many that participated and got the word out with their fundraising efforts. HLAA National and our chapter will greatly benefit from all the hard work as we embark on the rest of 2019 on to 2020 advocating for those with hearing loss.

The Walk welcomed over 500 walkers, were joined by 30 amazing teams, and raised over $50,000 and counting. Note that donations will continued to be accepted through July 31 so it’s not too late to contribute! Any questions can be addressed to our info@hlaa-la.org email address. See below for the photo gallery highlighting the Walk.

June 22 Meeting – Emergency Preparedness Part II!

If you enjoyed our previous seminar on emergency services, this is Part II! The fabulous Richard Ray is going to tell us what systems are already in place in case of an emergency. Even better, what’s available in the future. He’s here to listen to us, hear our concerns, and implement better systems.

Evolving technology creates more options for individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, deafblind, or have speech or cognitive disabilities for effective communication during emergencies.  The presentation will cover the Federal Communications Commission and Department of Justice’s regulations to facilitate accessible 9-1-1 calling and accessible emergency notifications.  Emergency communications options available today and in the future will also be discussed, such as real-time text, short message service, and other communication modalities.

Time: 9:30am for light fare and shmoozing, 10:00-noon for program and other HLAA announcements.

Location: Sherman Oaks Library -14245 Moorpark St, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
