Celebrating our First 20 Years!

About HLAA-LA

The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) is the nation’s largest organization for people with hearing loss. HLAA-Los Angeles is one of approximately 120 chapters nationwide, sharing the mission of the national organization. Our local chapter works tirelessly to open the world of communication through information, education, advocacy, and support. We want everyone to know that they are not alone in their hearing loss journey.

Our Story

Over the past two decades, HLAA-LA has grown and evolved. Here’s a glimpse into our journey:

  1. Founding Years (2004-2006)
    • In 2004, a small group of passionate individuals came together to form HLAA-LA.
    • Our first meeting was attended by just a handful of people, but it marked the beginning of something significant.
    • We focused on mutual support, education, and raising awareness about hearing loss.
  2. Growth and Advocacy (2007-2012)
    • As word spread, our membership grew steadily.
    • We organized more than 50 meetings, celebrated milestones, and partied on various occasions.
    • Our representatives attended HLAA Conventions, got involved with Walk4Hearing, and connecting with the broader hearing loss community through various outreach efforts.
  3. Community Impact (2013-2024)
    • HLAA-LA became a hub for information and resources.
    • We took a greater approach to get engaged with educators, healthcare providers, and legislative bodies to raise awareness.
    • Our Walk4Hearing events grew bringing more people together and fostering a sense of community.
  4. Looking Ahead
    • Technological Advancements: Over the coming years, we anticipate exciting advancements in hearing technology and AI. From improved hearing aids to innovative communication devices, HLAA-LA will continue to educate and empower individuals.
    • Advocacy and Accessibility: We’ll advocate for better accessibility in public spaces, looped venues, and workplaces.
    • Support Networks: HLAA-LA will expand its reach, providing support to even more people with hearing loss. Online platforms and virtual and in-person meetings will play a crucial role.
    • Research and Awareness: We’ll stay at the forefront of research, promoting early intervention and reducing the average seven-year delay in seeking help for hearing loss.
    • Inclusivity: Our chapter will continue to sensitize the general population about the special needs of those with hearing loss. We’ll work toward a world where communication barriers are minimized.
