The masks are coming off and we can read lips again!

Do you know and understand what a “locked” hearing aid is? Perhaps you even have one and may not know it. Currently, there is an important assembly bill (AB435) in the California State legislature you should be aware of introduced by Assemblymember Kevin Mullin
“Locked” hearing aids are not consumer-friendly; they require you to return to the provider you purchased them from for repair and adjustments. This practice takes away your consumer right to choose a provider for proper follow-up and caring for your hearing aid. Many times, this policy is not explained at the time of purchase.
To learn more and how to get involved, please review the HLAA California State Association website. Have any questions, just email us!
The hearing loss community and our chapter lost an icon when our beloved Grace Tiessen passed away at 11am on March 23. She passed away calmly and quietly in her home of 62 years. This was her wish, no ER, no nursing homes, just at home with her children watching over her.
Grace had a storied life full of many experiences, including going back to school at age 51, graduating from UC Berkeley in 1940 at a time when women graduating college was very rare, and joining HLAA in 1984 after asking herself the question, “What does it mean to be hard of hearing in the hearing world?”.
It is with profound sadness that we inform you of the passing of our beloved Katherine “Kat” Burns. Katherine and her husband Danny Tubbs were among the seven founding members of the LA chapter of HLAA. Kat is the only person in our chapter’s history to have served as president for three consecutive years. Over the years, she also served as treasurer and secretary, and she spent several years on the steering committee. Kat was known for her beautiful smile and warm personality. When she was the Walk4Hearing Captain, she named our team The LA Stars, and we have been shining ever since.

It is with great pleasure that I thank the current HLAA-LA Steering Committee for the wonderful 15-Year Anniversary Celebration on Nov. 2, 2019. It was both informative and joyful! As one of the founders of this group, I could not be prouder.

July Meeting Summary – Another Successful Rap Session!
Thanks to everyone who attended our July meeting rap session – while we did not have record attendance, we sure had a mighty, passionate and spirited discussion, moderated by our very own Sandy Blake!
Due to the great response from our previous rap sessions, we will be having another interactive meeting, this time on the subject of hearing challenges in the summer.
Are you confused about what auditory equipment to pack for a day at the beach?
What should you take and what should you leave at home?
Are you worried that sweating in the heat of summer will cause your hearing aid to malfunction?
For you CI wearers, are you concerned about going through metal detectors and scanners at airports?
Would you like to be prepared for travel with a kit for your hearing equipment, devices and accessories?
Day and Time: Saturday, July 27 – 9:30am for light fare and shmoozing, 10:00-noon for program and other HLAA announcements.
Location: Sherman Oaks Library –14245 Moorpark St, Sherman Oaks, CA 91423
