Dear Abby Recommends HLAA

Dear Abby Recommends HLAAHearing loss is not an uncommon challenge many people face, but how they handle it is another challenge in itself. No one should ever face some of the consequences of losing one’s hearing. This includes depression, avoiding meaningful social connections and feelings of helplessness.

Dear Abby publicly noted in her column addressing an individual struggling with hearing loss how the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) and associated state chapters can provide immediate support and help. The HLAA Los Angeles Chapter has provided this source of support, education and information for over 14 years and we want to continue to expand our outreach to those in need. Learn more via the HLAA National website how HLAA and chapters can help. Abby recommends it!

Meeting for the first time in a completely new place can be a nerve-racking experience. Will everyone find the new place? Will the audio and visual equipment work? Will Mitzi bring her homemade apple strudels? When we all finally said our goodbyes, it’s safe to say the meeting was a big success.

April 28 Meeting – Canine Companions for Independence

Our April Chapter meeting is bound to be a fun gathering with a canine feel to it. Melissa Billingsley, RVT Practice Manager for Billingsley Veterinary Clinic and a member of the Canine Companions for Independence, will visit us with a furry friend to share and educate us all how those hard of hearing can maintain their independence and ease of mind by having a hearing dog. It should be very educational and fun so make sure to join starting at 10am sharp (but arrive earlier to mingle or to introduce yourself if it’s a first time for you).

Please click here for meeting information and directions. See you then!

Walk4Hearing & Kickoff Luncheon

Your HLAA-LA Stars team captain is feeling lonely! I’m the only one who’s signed up for our annual fund-raiser, which is 89 days out. Join me!

The Walk4Hearing supports the efforts of both our National organization and our chapter. It’s coming up on Saturday, June 9 at Long Beach Marina Green Park. Sign up (please) to be a part of our chapter team, the HLAA-LA Stars, on our Walk page, http://hlaa.convio.net/site/TR/Teamraiser/LongBeachWalk?team_id=45468&pg=team&fr_id=2477

The page will be updated this week. In the meantime, start thinking about how you can ask family and friends to donate to this organization that means so much to you.

To get inspired, meet other walkers, and pick up materials, there will be a free kick-off luncheon on Saturday, April 21 from 11:30am-1:30pm at Angelo’s and Vinci’s Ristorante, 550 N Harbor Blvd, Fullerton, CA 92832

RSVP by April 13, using the form here, http://hlaa.convio.net/site/TR?fr_id=2477&pg=entry (it’s the main page for the Long Beach Walk), or to Teri Drake, talison4@yahoo.com
