October – December Chapter Calendar

As 2018 winds down, it means one thing for our chapter.

Party Time!

October – The rap session on the 13th is a full house; thanks to Georgia for hosting. Remember that this takes the place of our regular meeting. If you show up at the library on the 27th, be prepared to be part of the kids Halloween party.

November 3rd – We’ll have our annual “Coping with the Holidays” chapter meeting, 10am-noon (come as early as 9:30) at the library, featuring some skits put together by Sandy Blake and input from all. Then, we’ll start the partying with a potluck lunch. Please bring a dish that can be shared by 8-10 people. RSVP with a hint of your food item to Jen, jen@hlaa-la.org

December 8th – We’ll close out the year with our fantabulous evening holiday party, once again hosted by The Amazing Grace Tiessen at her beautiful home in Pasadena. Your Steering Committee will provide a catered meal. And, what would be our holiday party without a white elephant gift exchange? Stay tuned for further details!

Steering Committee Elections – Can You Serve?

Your HLAA-LA chapter is looking for a few good people to stand for our September 22 steering committee election. Are you one of them?

As a steering committee member, you’ll be part of the team that shapes chapter meetings, parties and other activities.

To serve on the steering committee, you need to meet these requirements.

·     Be a paid member of HLAA National

·     Have attended a minimum of six chapter meetings

·     Participate in 5-10 hours per month of online SC communication

·     Know or willing to learn Slack and Confluence online programs for SC communications

·     Have a valid email address

·     Respond to written SC communications within 24 hours

·     Attend all SC meetings (on average, following every other chapter meeting)

Yes, this is a comprehensive list. But serving on the steering committee gives you the satisfaction of doing something worthwhile for yourself and your hearing loss community!

If you are interested, or have questions, please send an email to info@hlaa-la.org and a steering committee member will respond.

Fun in the Sun July 4th Party!

(From Tim, our Web Dude)

We had a great turnout for our annual HLAA-LA July 4th party. Good friends, plenty of food, nice weather, a pool and a big California Oak all to make the fun in the sun a day to remember! The turnout was great, great enough that I didn’t have a chance to meet everyone. I can especially attest to this after looking at the photo gallery below and seeing so many folks I missed!

July 4th Shindig

Our annual Independence Day celebration is coming up sooner than we think! Nine days from now we’ll be breaking out the BBQ, potluck and a little swimming under the enormous tree in Kat & Danny’s backyard in Montrose. Time is from noon to 4pm.

Burgers, hot dogs and fixings will be provided by the chapter. Feel free to bring something else to be grilled, such as veggie or turkey burgers.

So far, the potluck list is looking delicious! Send a message to info@hlaa-la.org to add your RSVP and potluck dish. The address will be provided to all who are coming.

At this writing we have: spiked tea, guac & chips, Danny’s favorite chicken wings, apple slaw, pasta salad, cookies, cherries, beverages.

C’mon and join the fun!

Independence Day Party!

Get ready to party – again!

Chapter co-founders and all-around cute couple Kat and Danny have graciously offered to once again host our chapter’s Independence Day party beside their backyard pool in Montrose. It will be held on Wednesday, July 4th, most likely around noon. Grilling fixings will be provided. We’ll pass around a potluck sign-up sheet at Saturday’s meeting, or you can RSVP in the ‘contact us’ link here; let us know what you’d like to bring to share. Address and more details to follow.

Hope to see you there!

A Party to Remember!

The HLAA-LA chapter’s Memorial Day weekend gathering on May 26th exceeded everyone’s expectations!

Nearly 30 members and their guests—including some we haven’t seen in quite a while—converged on president Heather Lehr’s beautiful home in San Marino to enjoy a lovely afternoon of food, fun and friendship. Seems like people enjoyed socializing so much, that all other planned activities and announcements went by the wayside, and three hours passed in the blink of an eye.

Lisa Beth on Jeopardy!

Jeopardy game showOur very own Lisa Beth Davis was a contestant on the very popular Jeopardy! game show aired on December 19. Lisa Beth had the most correct answers and didn’t shy away from buzzing in first with the answer. It has to be a nerve wrenching experience to be on the spot trying to recall answers as a question that yours truly could never do. We are so proud of Lisa Beth and we can say the chapter now has a celebrity! See further for more information about the show and how to see the episode in case you missed it.
