American Girl of the Year for 2020 Checked out by our own Chapter Members!
(By our own Wendi Washington!)
On New Year’s Day I dragged Nanci Linke-Ellis over to the launch event at American Girl. The 2020 doll of the year, Joss was being introduced. She is a surfer girl and a cheerleader who wears one hearing aid. Woo-hoo! The place was teeming with girls and their families buying these adorable but expensive dolls.
We represented the LA chapter as well as the national organization. We took pictures with the store manager and met some students from Burbank HS, who were there to showcase their sign language abilities. All in all, it was a nice event and we were happy to be a part of it.
That said, we also noted that there was no information whatsoever about hearing loss, hearing aids or about HLAA. We also remarked to ourselves that for the most part, hearing aids and water don’t really mix. A big wave could be big trouble! And lastly, every time I touched anywhere near the dolls ear, I knocked the hearing aid off and poor Nanci picked it up from somewhere. I really hope that the kids have better luck keeping up with that hearing aid and I hope that the next edition of Joss will come with a little pamphlet or something about her hearing aid. Until then, go Joss!??
