A March 27 Chapter Meeting Not to Miss!

Hearing Loss Challenges Don’t Stop at the Ears

Join us for what should be a fascinating and engaging presentation about hearing loss and new hope with up-and-coming treatment options.

Date: Saturday, March 27
Time: 10 a.m. (PT)
Speaker: Dr. Nancy Tye-Murray (bio)
Duration: 90 minutes

Hearing loss challenges don’t stop at the ears. Co-morbidities of hearing loss include social isolation and loneliness, depression, increased risk of falls, and cognitive decline and related dementias.

In our upcoming Chapter meeting, Dr. Nancy Tye-Murray will describe how digital therapeutics are changing the face of healthcare, and then present an example of how digital therapeutics may be used to treat hearing loss and its downstream effects.

Nancy Tye-Murray, PhD., is a Professor of otolaryngology-head & neck surgery at Washington University School of Medicine.

Discovering World Hearing Day

March 3 was World Hearing Day (WHD) which included the first-ever “World Report on Hearing” prepared by the World Health Organization (WHO). The theme for this year’s WHD was recognition for “Hearing Care for All”. Many populations are underserved when it comes to hearing services, financial support, and proper care.

The Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA) website has a page dedicated to WHD. Included on this page are informational pieces about hearing loss, the latest press releases (English and Spanish), and highlights from WHO regarding integrating ear and hearing care into national health plans.

Virtual Meeting Coming September 26!

As the pandemic continues, so does our ever-continuing need to stay connected with each other and catch up on how we are doing. The isolation, communication challenges, and just the daily struggles we endure take its toll. Nothing like a time to see each other, talk about how we’re doing and gather the support and encouragement on topics that matter to us.

Please mark your calendar to join us this coming Saturday at 10:00 a.m. PT. We will moderate questions with you all to discuss and learn from each other but please bring your questions and concerns to share with the group. We’ll also talk about plans toward the future with the chapter!

Our July 25 Virtual Meeting was a Huge Success!

View the meeting transcript

We had an incredible meeting last Saturday – David Majit and Chalese Buttars of Oticon spoke to our group (we had a “full house” of more than 70 participants) on Brain Hearing and Communication Strategies. Local audiologist Jeff Grama was on hand to deftly answer every question (and there were many!) during the Q&A.

While we miss seeing you all in person and sharing coffee and snacks, Zoom is giving us the ability to reach out to a wider audience – a small silver lining to the cloud during these challenging times.

Save the date: August 22nd for our next meeting. Ray Goldsworthy, Associate Professor of Research Otolaryngology at USC will be speaking to us. Ray is a cochlear implant wearer and, therefore, “gets us” and devotes his research to rehabilitation and other efforts to improve our lives. Please join us for what will be an engaging meeting!

Stay tuned for more information coming soon!
